단위 투입량 당 생산된 재화와 서비스의 총량의 변화를 분기별로 측정한 것. 투입량은 노동력과 자본투입을 합친 것이다. 노동요소의 단위 비용은 임금압력을 측정할 수 있는 유용한 지표다. 생산성의 중요성은 지난 몇 년간 증가해 왔는데 이는 연방준비은행이 생산성의 증가를 낮은 수준의 인플레이션 때문이라고 해석했기 때문이다.
Technically, the rate of output per unit of input. In the economy at large, productivity generally means labor productivity, or output per hour worked. Essential data on this is issued quarterly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate of productivity growth has slowed in recent decades, and this is a cause of some controversy. Some people attribute the decline the increasing proportion of the workforce in service industries, where productivity is notoriously difficult to measure. Others indict the government's ability to measure inflation; if the government is overestimating inflation (and many economists believe it is), then it would be underestimating real (as opposed to nominal) economic growth. Thus, it would also be underestimating labor productivity.

ISM은 민간 단체로 각 기업의 구매관리자(Purchasing Manager)들이 회원으로 가입한다. ISM은 매달 전국의 회원들에 정형화된 질문서를 보내고, 답변을 수거해 산출된다. ISM 제조업 지수는 회원들에게 향후 제조업경기가 좋아질것인지 나빠질것인지 의견을 물어서 100%가 좋다고 말하면 100, 50%만 좋다고 말하면 50, 한명도 좋아지지 않을것 같다하면 0이되는 제조업 경기에 관한 지표로, 50을 밑돌면 경기 수축을, 반대로 50을 넘어서면 경기 확장을 수개월동안 예상한다. 장구한 역사와 정확성, 실시간에 가까운 경기 판단력 때문에 ISM 제조업 지수는 월스트리트의 이코노미스트들이 가장 신뢰하는 경제지표 중의 하나이다.
The Institute for Supply Management surveys nearly 400 manufacturing firms on employment, production, new orders, supplier deliveries, and inventories. A composite diffusion index of national manufacturing conditions is constructed, where reading above (below) 50 percent indicate an expanding (contracting) factory sector. Export orders, import orders, backlog orders and prices paid for raw and unfinished materials are also measured, but these are not included in the overall index.
