국적에 상관없이 한 국가 안에서 생산된 재화와 서비스의 시장가치를 평가한 것이다. 국민총생산(GNP)이 국민에 착안한 통계인 데 비해 GDP는 국토 내에서의 생산에 착안한 통계이다. 외국인이 한 국가 안에서 생산한 것은 GDP에는 계상되지만 GNP에는 포함되지 않는다. 자국민이 외국에서 생산한 것은 GNP에는 포함되지만 GDP에는 포함되지 않는다. GDP는 네 가지 주요 구성요소가 있다. 소비, 투자, 재정(정부지출), 수출이다. 핵심적인 수치는 매 분기 발표되는 전분기 대비 성장률이나 전년도 대비 성장률이다. GDP보고서는 3가지의 발표가 있다. 1)사전발표(advanced release - first) 2)예비발표 (preliminary release - 1st revision) 3)최종발표 (final release - 2nd and last revision). 이러한 수정치들은 시장에 실질적인 영향을 미친다.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the consummate measure of economic activity. The GDP report contains a treasure-trove of information which not only paints an image of the overall economy, but tells investors about important trends within the big picture. GDP components like consumer spending, business and residential investment, and price (inflation) indexes illuminate the economy's undercurrents, which can translate to investment opportunities and guidance in managing a portfolio.

미시건大 소비자심리지수는 Conference Board에서 발표되는 소비자심리지수와 거의 흡사하나, 매달 2번의 발표가 있습니다 (예비발표, 최종발표). 소비자신뢰지수를 발표하는 사설조사기관인, Confrence Board와 마찬가지로 기대지수, 현재동향을 나타내는 두개의 subindex가 있습니다. 기대지수는 Conference Board의 경기선행지수의 구성요소이기도 합니다.
